Constipation, or irritable bowel syndrome, is defined as a decrease in stool frequency to two times a week or less, the patient feeling highly strained and bloated. The cause is usually an improper diet, but if you want to find out how to treat irritable bowel syndrome, first we must look at the causes.

To understand how constipation occurs, people need to know how everything inside us works. Foods reaches the colon, where water is absorbed, minerals and so on, turning it into feces or food residue. Muscle contractions in the colon push the stool towards the rectum.

Constipation occurs when the colon absorbs too much water or if the colon muscle contractions are slow, causing a slow passage through of the stool through the colon. It can also occur in those with mega dolichocolon (colon longer and wider in diameter).

Common causes of constipation:

  1. Diet low in fiber
  2. Lack of exercise, especially in the elderly
  3. Drug therapy
  4. Irritable bowel syndrome (alternating constipation – diarrhea)
  5. Change of habits or daily routine, such as pregnancy, age
  6. Abuse of laxatives
  7. Ignoring the need to remove a go to the bathroom
  8. Dehydration
  9. Various ailments
  10. Disorders of the colon and rectum
  11. Bowel dysfunction (chronic idiopathic constipation)

A recent study regarding how to treat irritable bowel syndrome brought some new ideas. Recently, an international team led by University of Adelaide researchers has identified the mechanism of pain relief of a new drug for treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C), based on nonclinical studies, and quantified its effectiveness in pain relief in human trials. According to studies, IBS affects up to 15% of western populations, costing millions of dollars annually in Australia alone in lost productivity and health care. Approximately one third of IBS patients are diagnosed as having IBS-C.

“The drug is effective in relieving abdominal pain associated with IBS-C and is already available and registered for use by IBS-C patients in the USA and Europe. It is yet to go through the regulatory process in Australia”.
